Heavenly Father,
Thank you for placing in my path
brothers and sisters who think differently than me;
brothers and sisters who don’t lead their lives
the way I would in their shoes;
brothers and sisters who offend my sensibilities;
and brothers and sisters who I believe are just plain wrong.
With your faithful help, Father,
I am willing to step outside the rigid rails
of right and wrong,
to perceive a higher order Truth.
With you as my beacon,
I am willing to gaze into the soul
of my brothers and sisters,
to locate in them
the divine light of our brother Christ,
the value of their existence,
and the blessing you bestow on me
by placing them in my path.
I am willing, with your guidance,
to see what it is in my brothers and sisters
that I object to in myself.
Help me to repurpose my thought energy
to integrating the parts of me that feel
threatened and threatening,
proud and ashamed,
right and wrong.
Help me to honor this willingness
even in moments of frustration,
that I may cleanse the dark clouds around my heart,
leaving nothing for my brothers and sisters
but love.
Amen.
Thank you for praying with me. It helps more than you know.

A Prayer for Enemies
This week’s prayer needs a bit of commentary. I feel it might come in handy for some of us in light of recent events. Use it for your political opponents, for personal grudges, for anyone toward whom you may feel the burden of resentment or the sting of betrayal. I especially recommend praying for those public figures and political coalitions who, in ou…
