Week 1 of Radical Focus and Productivity
Extremists Being Awesome: A Report
Week 1 of the Extremists Being Awesome focus and productivity group was a great success!
(If you missed the Extremists Being Awesome announcement post, it’s here.)
Turns out, having a dedicated time to “do the work” and a group of encouraging people to help keep you on track is great for both time management and motivation. Especially for us Extremist-types.
We tend to be idea people, and as idea people, we are easily distracted by shiny new ideas. It’s also easy for us to be drawn into the trap of telling people about our ideas, brainstorming our ideas, planning how to do our ideas, and not being consistent with doing the work that’s necessary to birth the ideas into reality. Extremists Being Awesome is designed to help with that.
Over the course of the week, we had six attendees between the weekly motivation call and the daily focus sessions. We’ve got Extremists in the group working on all kinds of exciting projects in the fields of natural healthcare, institutional reform, creative writing, art, and self help.
I had a lot of fun connecting with my fellow Extremists on Sunday’s motivational call. We used this time to get to know each other a bit, to talk about our objectives for the coming week, and to discuss tips for maintaining focus and increasing productivity. What makes this weekly call essential is the built-in accountability feature. When you tell the group what you intend to accomplish over the next week’s focus sessions, it motivates you to strive harder to achieve those goals so you can report your success on the next week’s call.
The format of the focus sessions (two 50 minute work sprints with chat breaks before, between, and after) seems to be very effective for maximizing productivity. Participants expressed that they are getting more quality work done, with fewer distractions, than they typically would on their own. Personally, I’ve made significant progress on my project, and I expect that to continue on into next week and beyond.

Our next motivational call is on Sunday at 5pm eastern, and focus sessions take place Monday-Saturday from 10am to 12pm eastern.
